Time After Time
Exhibition is opening soon!
For the last few months my Studio has been a hive of activity. I’ve been wanting to write about it but needed time to process what it truly felt like as I prepared for my upcoming exhibition. Words like overwhelm, exhilaration, pride, excitement, exhaustion and fear all come to mind. It’s a real mixed bag of emotions, this life of an artist. It’s been many years since my last exhibition and I had forgot how awesome and how tiring it is.
The exhibition called “Time After Time” will be a retrospective of my career over the past 25 years. It has been a thrill to spend time with some of my paintings that I painted decades ago. They feel like they were from another life. These pieces have taken me on a journey through my past. Looking at them all together, I see much of my life. Memories of trips come flooding back to me; the joy of being lost with Mom in Umbria, touring around Crawford Bay and painting in Riondel, a week spent in Banff, a day trip with my Dad to Kananskis, visiting the Glenbow Museum to see the Group of Seven exhibit with Mom and cousin Penny, a drive through the old growth forest to Island Lake with brother Dave, seeing Bootleg Mountain for the first time when Mom and I moved to the Kootenays in 1997. Yes, looking at these paintings are glimpses of my life history.
These paintings also connect me to my clients, as it is a very special relationship to have someone want to hang my work in their home. My clients have always been a big part of my life and their energy will also be gracing the walls of this exhibition. I am grateful to those who have loaned their paintings for six months. It was a big ask for them to part with such a special piece of their lives and I cannot wait for the public to see these paintings that have never been exhibited.
After months of preparation, when the art mover pulled away with my paintings carefully wrapped and secured, I breathed a big sigh of relief. My part of the work is complete and I leave the rest in the capable hands of the Esplanade Art and Heritage Centre. The walls in my Studio are almost bare and visitors are not pleased. To me, they look like a blank canvas. I am taking a painting reprieve and focusing on words for a while. It feels great to have a different creative focus to see what will emerge.
I am looking forward to the paintings being seen by a new audience. For those of you who would like to attend, the show opens in Medicine Hat on April 17 until October 17. You are also invited to the opening reception that takes place on May 9 from 7-9pm at the Esplanade Art & Heritage Centre. I will be in attendance at the opening and would love to see you there! There will also be two artists opening their exhibits in the other galleries so there is plenty of art and live music to enjoy. Mark May 9 on your calendar!
Until then, I will be hanging out here in my empty Studio with my notebooks, laptop and my books. Please drop me a note and let me know what you are up to.
Ciao,
Caprice
A little inspiration for you:
*I am currently reading “Everyday Monet” by Aileen Bordman. The beautiful photos of Monet’s garden remind me of the precious moments I spent there. This book will inspire any artist!
